About Us

The Green Trust is a registered charity which raises money to support local groups who are improving the environment and landscape of Prince Edward County.

The Green Trust was set up in 1999 by Rico Antognini and John Murray during a downturn in the economy. The two, with backgrounds in non-profit organizations, thought it to be a wise move to do some forward thinking about the financial status of the Prince Edward County Horticultural Society and following a presentation, set up the trust.

The provincial government gives the PEC Horticultural Society a grant, pro-rated to its membership, typically about $1,000 per year but as costs go up, the membership fluctuates, sometimes downward. The Green Trust was established as a charity to raise money, invest conservatively and eventually distribute the interest on the money to support the garden clubs and societies in Prince Edward County.

When the Canada Revenue Agency said in 2005 that the Trust must start paying out 80 per cent of bequested monies, the Trust starting presenting donations.

Over the years we have given some $6,000 to groups such as:

  • The PEC Horticultural Society
  • Ameliasburgh Garden Club
  • Master Gardeners
  • Picton Cenotaph
  • Glenwood Cemetery
  • Hastings/Prince Edward Land Trust - Miller Farm
  • The Hospice

The Trustís volunteers hold a major fundraiser each year, such as a garage sale or garden tour. They also raise funds through 50/50 draws, collection jars, collecting Canadian Tire money, bulb sales and personal donations.

As a registered charity, the Green Trust provides charitable receipts for income tax purposes. Give generously!
